Feast of All Saints is largely attributable to the veneration of martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the faith in Christ, and are not mentioned either in the local martyrologiach, nor in the canon of the Mass. Originally, the festival is celebrated on the 13th May.
In the third century, spread to the whole tradition of carrying the sacred relics, or parts thereof, in other places. In this way, they wanted to emphasize that the saints are the property of the whole Church. When in 610 Pope Boniface IV received from the emperor's pagan Pantheon ancient temple, he ordered to be there numerous relics and consecrated this building into a church dedicated to Our Lady of Martyrs. Since that time worshiped all the dead martyrs, on 1 May.
Pope Gregory III in 731 moved the celebration of the 13th May Day 1.listopada. The reason was probably caused by difficulties with half of multitudes of pilgrims coming to Rome in the spring. In 837 Gregory IV decreed that from now on 1 November was not only dedicated to the memory of the martyrs, but all the saints of the Catholic Church. At the same time at the request of the Emperor Louis the Pious extended this feast to the whole Church.
