When Layla Heyer clebrated her fifteenth birthday four weeks ago, she didn't want clothes, jewellery or make-up. Layla wanted a new nose, and her parents paid for the operation. `It's my body, so I can change it if I want. Now I really feel a lot happier.` Doctor Hal West was Layla's plastic surgeon. `In the past my patientswere older,` he says. `But now I see about twenty teenagers every week. They want to be more attractive, and that's OK. But we can't solve everybody's problem with an operation. One mother wanted surgery for her eleven-year-old daughter, who was overweight and `not popular enough` at school. In my opinion, that's irresponsible. Plastic surgery can be dangerous and painful but it is common in the USA and Brazil, and it's also becoming more popular in the UK. A British magazine recently asked girls, aged thirteen to fifteen, for their opinions. Forty percent wanted plastic surgery. Only eight percent were happy with their bodies. But why? Maybe there are too many images of `perfect people` in magazines and on television. People see these images and feel ungly. Doctos West confirms that people often bring pictures to his clinic: `Boys sometimes bring pictures of Brad Pitt`, he says. 'The girls want Jennifer Aniston's nose or Jennifer Lopez's curves.` But will these people be different after their operations? You don't need a perfect body to be beautiful or happy
