Fortunately on 12 October 1492 a sailor saw land, but they didn't know where they were. Columbus thought they were near the coast of the East Indies, but in fact it was a small island in the Bahamas. Columbus later returned to Spain with gifts from the 'New World' for the King and Queen.____Columbus made three more voyages to the New World but he never found the route to bring spices from Asia to Europe. In the same decade that Columbus discovered America, in 1498 the Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama sailed round the Cape of Good Hope, opening a direct sea route to India and beyond.
