“I made the decision when to finish my career during the Olympic Games in Vancouver last year,” Malysz told the PAP news agency, adding that he did not announce the move to avoid “media hype” throughout his last season.

Although there has been media speculation concerning Adam Malysz’s retirement, his trainer Hannu Lepistoe was kept in the dark about the ski-jumper’s plans.

“Hannu did not know [about my plans], although I’m sure he had a feeling [it was coming],” Malysz said. “[Lepistoe] is a sensitive man, and I did not want to tell him about my decision before the competition, sport is his whole life.”

Only Adam Malysz’s family knew of the jumper’s motives. “I discussed the issue with my wife last year,” Malysz admits, adding that “my wife and daughter had to put up with my absence [and] my bad moods when I was at home.”

1. Why did Adam keep his decision in secret for so long?

2. Did his trainer know about his decision earlier?

3. Who knew about his decision?

4. According to Adam, was he an easy person to get on with?
