In this, a hole is made in the middle of a horse chestnut and a piece of string is tied to it. Two players both take turns to hit the other’s chestnut until one breaks. The game is now banned in a lot of schools because, when the chestnut breaks, small pieces fly into the air and can hit children in the eye.

The area of France called Normandy, on the north west coast, is famous for its apples. In the autumn, these are picked and most are used to make two famous local drinks, cider and calvados. The farmers here grow 200 different kinds of apples. It takes at least two years before the calvados is ready to drink but if you keep it longer, it gets better and better. A twenty year old bottle of calvados costs much more than a ten year old bottle.
