The material presents two pictures, two quotations and a short part of a newspaper article. They all concern sports that do not require physical fitness, but intellect.

In the first picture I can see two men playing cards. It can be poker or bridge. In the second picture I can see two men playing chess.

The first quotation is very critical. It claims that only a physical activity deserves the name “sport”. The physical activity is combined with mental one, but if there is only mental activity we should not be able to speak about a sport.

The second quote, by Blaise Pascal, refers to chess. Pascal claims that chess is to the mind like gym is to the body: it exercises it, makes it fitter.

The article is about the final match in a pool championship. It is written in the same way sport reports are: the language is dynamic, it pictures the atmosphere of championship finals.

2. The sports are different, because one doesn’t need to be physically strong or fit, the preparation is also different, it includes a lot of analysis instead of physical training. All these sports are also individual, the players have to count on themselves, unlike in the team sports like basketball or football.

4. I would not agree, because I don’t think sports are limited to physical activity. In my opinion competition is a very important ingredient of the sports, and chess and bridge can be extremely competitive. Also, I think technique and strategy are something that makes many “traditional” sports so interesting, and it is something that definitely is present in chess and card games.

5. The most unusual sport I have watched is Worm Charming. I have seen the clips from the annual World Worm Charming Championships on YouTube. The sport is really strange: the competitors have to bring as many worms as they can to the ground, from the patch of it they are assigned. They have 30 minutes to do it. It is very funny to watch grown men and women calling the worms to come up. The only thing they are not allowed to do are dishwashing detergents.
