For hundreds of years, people have taken their rubbish to places and left in there. But leaving rubbish at landfill sites can be very bad for the environment.

The journey to the landfill site begins at home. Firstly, rubbish is put into bags or bins. Next the rubbish is collected by lorry and taken to a landfill site.

In most landfill sites the rubbish is just left outside. Then, over a long period of time, the rubbish stars to break down, and methane gas is produced. This gas escapes into the atmosphere and causes pollution. Many things that we throw away contain other dangerous chemicals. For example, batteries contain acid, and paint contains dangerous metals. When it rains these chemicals can get into the soil and the rivers near the landfill site.

In some modern landfill sites the situation is a lot better. To start with the rubbish is put into a special hole. After that, it is crushed by special machines. Later, dangerous chemicals and gases are taken out of the rubbish. A lot of the gas is used to make electricity. Finally the hole is covered with soil.

However even modern landfill sites are dangerous, noisy and smelly places and some gas still escapes into the air. If we really want to protect the environment the answer is simple: don't throw rubbish away - recycle it ! Recycling a much greener alternative.
