The Rusałki

According to a folk belief, a rusałka is a ghost of a girl or young woman who died in a strange way near a lake or forest, and who haunts the place where she died. A rusałka usually apperead on nights when there was a full moon, and it was dangerous to go near her because she could drown a person in her lake or kill them with her laughter. As time went by, people were no longer so afraid of the rusałki and started to describe them as beautiful fairies living close to lakes. Today a rusałka brings to mind a rather romantic picture of the wind moving delicately through the green trees above clear water.

Skarbnik, or the Miners' Guardian

In many regions of Poland, mining has been widespread for many centuries. Since mining is a very dangerous job, people used to build small underground chaples or churches, and belived in miners' patron saints who protected miners and kept them safe. In addition, Polish people also belived in a ghost, or spirit, called Skarbnik. Skarbnik was a guardian of miners who protected them from danger and helped them if they got lost. Skarbnik also led miners to diffrent treasures, like coal or precious metal. It was belived that seven though Skarbnik was a ghost, he looked, dressed and even spoke like a miner.

1. It came to life when a girl or a young woman died in strange circumstances near a lake or a forest.

2. She appeared near a plece where she died, usually when there was a full moon.

3. They killed somebody who saw them - they either drawned that people or murdered them with dangerous laughter.

4. Skarbik showed minors the right way if they got lost and helped them with avoiding dangers - for example falling rocks. He sometimes led people he liked to his treasures, which were jewels, precious materials or coal.

5. People said that he looked exactly like a minor - he probably wore a uniform and a helmet with a lamp.
