Przetłumacz na j.polski.Christopher Columbus was born In Genoa, a beautiful Italian town, In 1451. He made many voyages: to England, Africa, the Madeira islands and the Azores. His dream was to find a new way to the East Indies. Columbus did not want to follow other seamen and decided to sail west. He presented his plans to the king of Portugal but the king thought it was too dangerous and refused to give Columbus any money. Then Christopher Columbus went to Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand of Spain. They liked the idea of a new route. They provided Columbus with money and three ships: Santa Maria, Pinta and Nina. On 3 August, 1492 Columbus sailed from Palos in Spain. After a long journey, the sailors spotted land on 12 October. Columbus went ashore and named the island 'San Salvador'. He thought that the land was the Indies so when he met some natives, he called them 'Indians'. After visiting some other islands in the Bahamas, and also Cuba and Hispaniola, Columbus returned to Spain. He made some other voyages to the New World but he never discovered his mistake. Today people in many countries celebrate the anniversary of the discovery of America on 12 October. In the USA, Columbus Day (also called Landing Day or Discovery Day) is officially celebrated on the second Monday in October. The Americans observe the day in many ways. There are parades, the most famous one in New York, and religious services. Officials lay a wreath at the foot of the statue of Columbus in Boston, after an anniversary mass. And in Asbury Park, New Jersey, you can see a show presenting the story of the discovery. Every year the New World pays tribute to its discoverer, Christopher Columbus.
