The painting I would like to describe is "The Little Deer" by Frida Kahlo. For people who are not familiar with Kahlo's biography it may be surprising that the painting is actually a tragic self-portrait...

 

"The Little Deer" is an oil painting, which automatically means it would seem very heavy and dark. It depicts Frida's head with a deer's body. Her antlers are huge and beautiful, her legs tiny and her body slightly disfigured.

The creature is wounded by 8 arrows. We can see lots of blood and it creates a very surrealistic and tragic impression.

The scary, and at once fantastic forest, seems to have trapped Frida - she has nowhere to go and can only wait for death.

In the background we can see some lighting breaking up across the sky. But the sky is out of Frida's reach.

 

The hunter remains unknown to the viewers, but we may assume it was Frida's own suffering. She took up painting to redefine her own self.

Kahlo has always been my favourite female painter. I would kill to see the exhibition of her amazing works one day.
