WHAT ARE SOME GOOD WAYS TO TEACH CHILDREN ETIQUETTE?
I guess, the best way the fathers can teach children etiquette, is giving them good examples.
We have to remember children learn from what they see every day and if they see us having good manners they will do the same.
Giving some examples:
If you want to go to a sit-down restaurant without having your kids act like heathens, you have to practice at home setting the table with tablecloth, dishes, glasses and cloth napkins then show the kids how to use silverware. Don't forget they always have to be seated upright.
After they learn, all can go a nice restaurant
Also you can use the game of "What would you do" making a list of different scenarios and let one of the kids say what he thinks, after that open the discussion to the rest of the group.
One scenario could be: "You are in a dinner party and accidentally spill your drink on the table". What would you do?
After everybody says what they would do, you have to congratulate them for their answers and chose the correct one or explain what they would have to do according to etiquette.
DIFFERENCES IN ETIQUETTE
- North Africa, and some regions of China, the host will put more food on a plate once it is clean, because the host will assume the guest isn't full, but when the guest leaves a little bit of food on his plate it indicates food was enough.
When the host see a guest’s clean plate is a signal that he was not served enough, and the host may feel that he is being called cheap and the guest is showing his impolite side.
On the contrary, in my country a clean plate is sign that the food was exquisite and the host must feel praised for it.
- In some countries it is customary to greet people with a firm handshake, maintaining good eye contact, but in countries like France or Spain people great friends by kissing on both cheeks.
WHY ARE TABLE MANNER IMPORTANT?
First we have to understand that table manners are a courtesy.
By not understanding basic table manners, people are considerably disadvantaged because they don´t have the skills to eat appropriately with others, and probably show disrespect.
According with every culture, If I am poorly behaved in the table, probably I won’t be invited to eat again.
HOW WOULD PEOPLE BEHAVE IF THERE WERE NO RULES?
The rules did not go out to make the live more difficult.
The rules in society are based on the principles of doing the right thing or don't do the wrong thing.
For example, we are not allowed to steal or kill other people.
Some people do not do things like steal, rape or murder people, because it is illegal and don't do it because are afraid of going to jail.
I prefer to think most people are good because they want to be good or maybe because they simply are.
