There are lots of stereotypes about Polish people - as well as about every other nation. In this work, I'll try to show if they are true.
"Poles are thiefs". This is a very popular - and hurting - stereotype about our nation. Years ago, Poland was a poor country, where everyone was trying to get money, often in an illegal way. Many cars have been stolen abroad by the Poles. There was even a kind of joke between the Germans - "Go to Poland, your car is already there". I think these days are over now. We don't steal anything and we don't want to hear abroad "Look, he's Polish, he's obviously a thief".
"People in Poland are hospitable". These is a positive stereotype refering to our country. Polish hospitality is known all over the world, but I'm not sure if it's really true. Years ago, we probably were an amazingly hospitable nation, but I suppose these days we aren't different from any other European country.
"Polish people drink a lot". This is a really bad stereotype, that may hurt lots of Poles. That's true that people drink on parties, but we don't have alcohol for dinner, like it is in many other cultures, so I don't agree with this statement.
I think the stereotypes about Poles have their sources in history, but they aren't true now. The world is changing and we shouldn't generalize any nation.
