Rzymianie rozbili niepokonaną dotychczas flotę kartagińską. Od podstaw nauczyli się walczyć na morzu, wprowadzili przy tym innowację, która zapewniła im sukces. Swoje okręty, budowane na wzór kartagińskich, zaopatrzyli w ruchome pomosty (tzw. kruki), które przerzucali na okręty wroga. Po nich do ataku ruszali zaokręowani legioniści. Kartagina dążyła do odbudowy swojej potęgi i szukała rekompensaty, podbijając Półwysem Iberyjski. Rzym usiłował powstrzymać tę ekspansję i doprowadził do drugiej wojny ponickiej (218r.p.n.e.-201r.p.n.e.). Wówczas największy wódź kartagiński Hannibal wyruszył wraz ze swoją afrykańską armią z Półwyspu Iberyjskiego i przeszedł zaśnieżne Alpy (przeprowadził nawet 40 słoni), ale stracił z powodu skrajnych warunków połowę swoich wojsk. Hannibal całkowicie zaskoczył armię rzymską i rozbił ją w kilku bitwach. Jednak Rzym nie skapitulował, odbudował swoją armię, która przez 12 lat wytrwale wypierała z Italii topniejące wojska Hannibala. Wreszcie wódż rzymski Publiusz Korneliusz Scypio przeniósł działania wojenne do kartagińskiej Afryki i tam pokonał Hannibala. Zwycięski Rzym narzucił ciężkie warunki pokoju: Kartagina utraciła wszystkie posiadłości poza Afryką, musiała oddać Rzymowi swoją flotę wojenną i zapłacić ogromną kontrybucję. Trzecia wojna punicka (149r.p.n.e.-146r.p.n.e.) była w istocie egzekucją bezbronnej Kartaginy.
