The first week of October was an exciting week at the [Mickiewicz] Secondary School. For five days the school celebrated Anglophone Week. The school organized events that focused on everything English. There was history, geography, science and culture from Great Britain, the United States of America, Australia, and New Zealand.

Every class was responsible for something. One class prepared a poster on the native peoples of Australia. Another played music from England. Another showed films from Hollywood. Another showed photographs of New Zealand’s mountains. Another class cooked typical English food and served it to the other students. Students who study English at school participated in language competitions. The winner from each grade could go on to the regional competition and represent the school. Students who spoke only English during Anglophone Week, even to their friends at school, received good grades from their English teachers.

Students and teachers were all very involved in the preparations. The teachers started preparing last year already. The students joined the fun at the beginning of the school year. The teachers and students who were interviewed all said that this was an exciting and educational way of learning about other cultures. They said that it helped students who could not travel to an English-speaking country to feel like they were abroad.

The school administration is looking at the success of Anglophone Week and is thinking about repeating it for other languages taught at the school.
