Into the storm
1 .Most people are interested in the weather and what is going to happen over the next few days because they want to know how it will affect their free time . Tennis players hope it’s going to be sunny ; skiers hope the snow is going to be good ; windsurfers hope the wind is going to come from the right direction .
2. But there are some people who hope the weather is going to be extremely bad . They hope that there is going to be the kind of weather that most of us want to avoid - thunderstorms , lightning , hurricanes , tornadoes . These people are’storm
chaser’s - they follow bad storms as closely as they can , because being in a storm is more interesting , and certainly more exciting , than reading about it or watching a distance .
3.Some people chase storms because they are doing scientific research . Some are professionals who organize storm – chasing tours or take photographs or videos to sell .
But it isn’t a big business , and most chasers do it as a hobby , for the excitement of trying to predict when and where a big storm will be and then finding it in time to be in the middle of it before it finishes .
4.One of the best places in the world to find extreme storms is in the central states of the USA , in particular an area which has become known as’tornado alley . This is where the film Twister ( ‘twister’is another word for tornado ) is set , and although real chasers say that the film isn’t completely accurate , it gives a good idea of what storm chasing is all about . After the film came out , a lot more people started doing it , but anybody thinking about it should know about the negative aspects .
5. Storm chasers have to spend a lot of time keeping up to date with the latest weather conditions , and they have to be ready to jump into their cars and drive , sometimes hundreds of miles , to catch and follow a storm . They have to spend a lot of money ,
Too , on equipment like laptop computers , portable weather stations , cameras for photographs and video , and on petrol and food . And driving long distances in bad weather conditions is clearly dangerous . But they say it’s definitely worth it when they get right inside the storm and have the kind of experience they spend so much time looking for .
