Our apperance is a really sensitive topic nowadays, how many people had themselves killed becaues of that. But does the apperence affect our personality as well ?
Let's wear the shoes of one's friends. If you could just change your apperance, change yourself, then don't you think everyone would do that ? Changing our apperance may be a psychological signal to one's friends, to show them "I've changed ! I want to be treated differently !". But inside you are still the same person, you can't change, not so easily, and the people close to you will still think of you as the same person - even if you had changed. But on the other hand, changing our apperance may do have a different influence on perceving us by other people. If one is, one day, a small, clumsy boy, dress like a geek, and the next day he's a all black wearing metal fan - yes, people might get a different opinion on you. But when, as is aforementioned, when people get to know you, they will see, the small, clumsy boy, who used to dress like a geek deep inside.
But let's think about it in the positive way. If one changes his apperance he might get on with some confidence, which can affect him positively in general. It might be a catalyst for him to change ! In that case it might affect his character on the long way when adding the strong motivation to change to it, but like said before - in the eyes of friends and family he would still be the same guy.
To sum it all up, we can't simply change our character just by changing our apperance. Of course, we may be able to change the way people see us, but it won't change us at all. You can change your clothes to get some confidence, but changing your character is a really hard thing and can't be done as simply as that. You would need a many years long support of the psychologist and a really good motivation. It most cases your character is the kind of thing you can't change. But maybe it's better, because it would be able everyone would be so similar ...
