The Englishman Sir Rowland Hill was born in 1795. Rowland was a teacher and in 1822 he started his own school. Hill was interested in new inventions and his school was very modern for the time. It even had gas lights and central heating! But Hill is not famous for his school. He became famous because he invented the postage stamp.

In those days you paid for letters when you received them, not when you sent them. But many poor people couldn't pay, so the post office didn't give them their letters. One day in 1837, Hill was in the post office when a woman came to get a letter. The post office worker didn't give her the letter because she had no money. She was very unhappy because it was from her husband. This gave Hill an idea. He wrote to the post office and told them about his idea: a postage stamp.

In 1840, the post office made the first stamp. It was called the Penny Black because it cost one penny. The head of Queen Victoria was on the stamp. She made him Sir Rowland in 1860 and he died in 1864.

in 1870 his brother died and his family moved to Canada

in 1871 he moved to boston and there he taught in a school for deaf people

in 1876 when he was 29 years old he invited telephone

in 1877 he met Thomas Watson and they started the Bell Telephone Company

in 1915 they opened first Transamerican telephone line. He spoke from New York to Watson who was in San Francico

in 1922 he died in Canada
