Steve knew that tomorrow's journey was going to be difficult. He set his alarm clock and checked his bags one last time. Everything was ready. The night was very windy. The wind almost tore Steve’s tent. When the alarm went off, Steve had already been up for three hours. He was exhausted even before the journey. Wrapped up well he unzipped the tent and looked outside. It was still a bit dark but he knew he had to leave soon. He needed to make the last effort to reach the top of the mountain. The weather forecast for the rest of the week was depressing. With the use of ropes he made it to the top in 8 hours. With very little food, he decided to climb down the mountain as soon as possible. On the way down, all he had to drink was just melted snow. When he got back to his last night’s camp, he realized that the weather down here had been much worse and the whole camp was destroyed. He found one can of Campbell’s soup. It was all he had for the two-day climb down to the bottom of the mountain. With ropes half-torn, ice-cold limbs, and no food for 24 hours, he reached the bottom of the mountain. Found by the local people, he was immediately taken to hospital. The climb was a success – Steve was the first man to climb this mountain in winter – but it came at a very high price.
