Digital technologies have been expanding our horizons for some time now and we now learn much more via the Internet than we used to in the past. Not all people are, of course, content with technology dominating education. I would like to present some negative consequences of this course of action, alongside with my personal experiences.
First of all, the opponents of digital technologies replacing the traditional model of education say that only face-to-face are effective when we want to learn something. It seems to be quite true: I find it quite hard to concentrate when I have online lessons.
Second of all, it is not natural for people to spend many hours in front of their computer screens. It may be OK maybe for two or three hours, but not more. It is tiring for both the eyes and for the brain. I can also say that it is true for me. It has happened to me many times that I had to make a break between lessons just to give my eyes a bit of a break.
Finally, it is obvious that people need social contact – it is impossible to learn new skills in isolation, no matter how hard we try to do this. We need people to give us feedback and provide some support in the times of need.
To sum up, some digital solutions for education may be good for both students and teachers, but we should not overestimate their role in the process of learning – they are here to help, not to replace traditional education.
