Swoją przygodę z muzyką James zaczynał w wieku 9 lat lekcjami gry na pianinie, później grał na perkusji swojego brata Davida, by w końcu zostać przy gitarze.
Z gitarą w ręku, James postanowił zostać gwiazdą rocka w swoim pierwszym zespole
OBSESSION. W skład zespołu wchodzili, poza Jamesem, bracia Veloz (bas i perkusja) oraz Jim Arnold (gitara). Para przyjaciół, Ron McGovney i Dave Marrs wcieliła się w technicznych, członków zespołu. Oznaczało to siedzenie w garażu Veloz'ów i "zabawę" pulpitem sterującym oświetleniem. Po rozpadzie grupy Obsession, trio Marrs-Hetfield-McGovney kontynuowało wspólną grę.
Po przeprowadzce do La Brea, James w nowej szkole poznał perkusistę Jima Mulligana. Obaj chcieli pograć trochę z innym gitarzystą, ale niestety przerazili
go swym głośnym i ciężkim graniem. Gdy odkryto Hugh Tannera powstał PHANTOM LORD (druga kapela Jamesa), z Hugh na gitarze, Mulliganem na perkusji - James
śpewał i grał na gitarze. Przez zespół przewinęło się wielu basistów, aż w końcu James przeprowadził się spowrotem do Downey i kapela, siłą rzeczy rozpadła się.
W Downey James zamieszkał w domu rodziców Rona McGovney'ów, który miał być zburzony w wyniku budowy autostrady. Ten dom był idealnym miejscem do prób dla James'a i Ron'a. James przekabacił Ron'a i obiecał, że będzie go uczył gry na basie.
Trzecią grupą Hetfield'a był LEATHER CHARM. Został on utworzony z członków Phantom Lord, z tym, że James tylko śpiewał, a Ron zaczął grać na basie. Zespół grał takie covery jak: Iron Maiden "Remember Tommorow", czy Quiet Riot "Slick Black Cadillac". Grupa postanowiła wystąpić na paru imprezach i nagrała demo. Wtedy właśnie wszystko zaczęło się sypać. Pierwszy odszedł Tanner (zastąpiono go Troy'em James'em). Następnie Mulligan przeszedł do bardziej prograsywnego RUSH. Bez perkusisty zespół nie miał dalszych perspektyw.
W 1981 roku poznał Larsa Ulricha, który zaproponował mu założenie kapeli. Zgodził się na jego propozycję. Początkowo James Hetfield nie wierzył w swoje możliwości wokalne. Dopiero podczas nagrywania drugiego albumu grupy - Ride The Lightning, odkrył, że rzeczywiście potrafi śpiewać wykonując utwory Escape i Fade to Black. Nie licząc jednego wyjątku (utworu To Live Is to Die autorstwa Cliffa Burtona), aż do albumu St. Anger wydanego w 2003 roku, był jedynym twórcą tekstów. James znów jest jedynym twórcą tekstów na nowym dziele zespołu - Death Magnetic.
Od samego początku James był głównym autorem tekstów i riffów Metallici. Gdy nie pisze, śpiewa czy gra, to oddaje się polowaniu, sportom bądź grzebaniem w garażu.
Obecnie ma Chevy BelAir'a, którego zbudował sam.
Hetfield kolekcjonuje też stare gitary, szczególnie z 1963r., roku w którym się urodził. W swojej historii wiemy o tym, że koncertował na aż 36 gitarach!. Prywatnie niewiadomo na ilu grał J!
James started his adventure with musik when he was 9 years old. Firstly he played on piano , then on his brother's David drums, but at leat he ended playing on guitar. With his guitar in his hand, James wanted to be a rockstar in his first band" OBSESSION". The band was connected with James, Veloz brothers (basguitar and drums) and Jim Arnold (guitar). Couple of friends Ron McGovney and Dave Marrs was the technical members of the band.
That meant sitting in garrage and playing with the lights. When the band broke three friends Marrs-Hetfield-McGovney continued playinng together.
After moving to La Brea , James met new drummerboy Jim Mulligam in his new school. When the Hugh Tanner was discovered, they made the second James band PHANTOM LORD with Hugh who was playing on the guitar,Mulligam playing on drumms and James playinng also on the guitar but also singing. They were many basguitar player whose wanted to be in that band, but James returned to Downey. In downey he lived in family McGovney's house, which coulb be broken because it started to built new hallway.
That house was the perfect place to trails. James promised Ron that he learnt him playing on the basguitar. The third band named LEATHER CHARM. It was created with the members from phantom lord, but James only sang and Ron played on basguitar. They played covered such as:Iron Maiden "Remember Tommorow", or Quiet Riot "Slick Black Cadillac". They starred to playing on diffrent partys and they reccorded demo. And that was the disaster to band. Firstly went away Tanner then Mulligan to Rush band. With no drummerboy the band had no chances to survive.
In 1981 James met Lars Ulrich, who offered him to make a band. James agreed. At first Hetfield did not believe in his singing and vocal talent.
He came around during reccording the second album of the group and singing song like Escape i Fade to Black. He had written every songs texts ( only To Live Is to Die was written by Cliff Burton) since album St.Anger in 2003.
From the begginig James was the author of Metallica's songstexts and riffs.
When he was not writing, singing or playing he usually haunts, takes to sport or grubs in his garrage. Nowadays he has got Chevy BelAir which he makes himself.
Hetfield is collecting old guitares , especially from 1963, whe he was born.
He concentrated on 36 guitares but it does not know on how many he was playing on.

in 1981 he met lars ulrich who had proposed him to have a band. james agreed. firstly james didn't belive in his vocal opportunites. finally while he was recording the second album of group ride the lighting, he came to the conclusion that he really can sing, singing tracks escape, fade to black. running. addition one track ,,to live is to die" <- autor cliff burton; for album st, anger realased in 2003, he was great songwriter. james is still only one creator of lyrics - death magnetic. since the begining james was main lyrics's creator ( i rifftow metalici - nie rozumiem po polsku tego). when he don't write, sing or play he hount, play sport or poke in the garage. now he has chevy belair , which he had biult. hetfield collets old guitars, especially these from 1963, because he born then. we know tah in his history he was playing on 36 guitars. privately it doesn't say which he had.
