Merdeka palace
was built in 1873, when governor general loudon led the city, and completed in
1879, during governor general johan willem van lansberge’s administration. It
was designed by drossares and know as gambir palace.
On december,
27 , 1949, the palace withnessed a historical event , that is the signing of
the text regarding the recognition of indonesian independence. The
representative froom the united republic of indonesia was sri sultan
hamengkubuwono 9 and from the netherlands, A.H. J lonvik.
During the
ceremony , the indonesian flag substituted the royal dutch flag. People sang
the national anthem , indonesia raya , and shouted “ merdeka, merdeka” since
then, the palace was renamed merdeka palace
