TELEVISION - DISADVANTAGES

Many people say that television is chewing-gum for the eyes. Indeed, we often watch television because we have nothing better to do. A typical person spends about four hours daily in front of a TV set. However, we do not often realize that television can do us harm. First of all, it stops people from talking. Many families set up their activities and lifestyles around a TV program schedule. They do not communicate their feelings, do not exchange impressions or views but have their eyes glued to the TV instead. In this way the strong relationships in the family are weakening. Apart from that television has a very negative impact on children who are exposed to silly cartoons or violent detective stories. Not only do they waste their time by watching programs which do not teach them anything, but they are also getting tired of this. Moreover, they are easily influenced by trashy commercials and tempted by junk food, candy or expensive toys. It is true that watching television is comfortable but the more we watch, the more passive we become. Instead of going out for a walk or to jog, we prefer to sit in our armchairs and shatter our health. Television is like a drug. Those viewers who are already addicted, forget about everything else. They do not read books, do not entertain their friends, do not go to sporting events or to the theatre but just turn on the set and turn off the brain. They flip through the channels offered by cable TV to find their favourite show or a recent Hollywood movie and watch until it is time to go to bed. What is really astounding, they seem to be perfectly satisfied with this passive enjoyment. It is often said that television is a unifying force in the world. However, is it good or bad? With so many people watching the same programmes, the same shows, the same news, the same entertainment and the same advertising, the whole world becomes nothing else but a global village.
