Although there has been huge progress in recent years, we are still a long way from knowing how chemical processes inside our heads transform into individual thoughts or emotions. 2. __ Fortunately, scientists now have at their disposal a much wider range of techniques for seeing into the functioning of our brains. Detailed scanners are used to reveal which parts of the brain light up when we experience particular situations or feelings. These 3D electronic scans are proving extremely useful in combating a wide range of illnesses and conditions. 3. __ Another exciting development in this field is work on creating ever more efficient connections between the brain and computers. It has already been demonstrated that it is possible to control simple actions on a screen with a thought alone. 4. __ So what are the dangers of such progress? If we move closer to connecting our brains to computer systems, how will we know that we are still thinking independently? It may be that governments or large corporations will be able to interfere with our thought processes and affect our choices. 5. __ Whatever happens, one thing is certain – people will happily embrace any advance that is either an improvement in our lives, or provides the opportunity for additional entertainment.
