the Polish Tatars

Hiding in a tiny village close to the border with Bearus, the small wooden building is an unusual sight in the Polish countryside. In fact it is the oldest mosque in Poland. the village of Kruszyniany is home to the descendents of the Muslim Tatars who came here four centuries ago. Although Kruszyniany is the spiritual home for Poland's remaining 3 000 Tatars, there are in fact only four Tatar families in the village among a populatiojn of 160 people. Since the Second World War many younger members of the community have moved away so the town struggles to keep the old traditions alive. Aged 99 Mustafa Jasinski is the oldest member of the community. He is also the local Imam and every Friday jasinski leads the prayers in Polish but reads from the Koran in Arabic. Another tradition the local people are particularly proud of is their cooking. Recently Prince Charles visited the village and tasted dishes such us pierekaczewik( a kind of beef pie) , pieremacze ( similar to Polish pierogis) and listkowiec cake. At least some of the old traditions are easy and enjoyable to keep.
