Dear James
It's getting colder. The days are shorter and the nights are longer. Christmas is commng.
For Polish people Christmas Eve is more important than Christmas Day. In the evening all the family get together. Dinner starts when the first star appears in the sky. Before dinnner members of the family break a wafer and wish each other health and happines. There are usually twelve dishes on the table - carp, herring, salads, pierogi with cabbage and mushrooms, a cake with poppy seeds and other things. On Christmas Eve we don't eat meat. After the dinner people open the presents waiting for them under the Christmas tree and they sing carols. Many people go to church to attenda morning service called ''Pasterka".
On the 25th and 26th of December people visit their relatives or friends and eat a lot.
What is Christmas like in Britain ?
Best wishes,
Wojtek
Dear Wojtek,
It's also cold here but maybe a bit warmer than in Poland.
The 25th of December is called in Britain Christmas Day and the 26th of December - Boxing Day. In the morning on Christmas Day children wake up early and open presents left by Father Christmas at night. Small presents are in a Christmas stocking in their bedrooom, the bigger ones are under the Christmas tree.
Christmas dinner includes roast turkey, roast potatoes, brussels sprouts, mince pies and Christmas pudding. Before dinner people pull crackers. They make a loud noise and have some sweets and some toys inside. After dinner many people wath the Queen on TV saying "Happy Christmas" to everyone, go for walks or visit friends.
On Boxing Day people usually stay at home eating, drinking and wathing TV. In the 19th century rich people gave their servants boxes with presents on that day.
Could you telll me more about breaking the wafer? We don't have this custom in Britain.
Best wishes,
James
