We don't know for sure who the first person to land in the Antarctic was. Captain James Cook was the first person to see the continent in 1773. Then in 1821 an American seal hunter landed there. Nobody visited the continent again for a long time. Thr first person reached the South Pole in 1911. He was a Norwegian called Roald Amundsen.



There are no trees in Antarctica, only very small plants. The largest animal to live on the land is a sort of insect only 13mm long! There is a lot of wildlife, including seals and whales, in the oceans around Antarctica. The most famous inhabitants is the Emperor penguin. It lays its eggs here.
