Z – Hey, I need to talk to you about something.
E – Yes, what is it?
Z – You know how you often stay up late to chat with your friends online? Well, it’s kind of starting to bother me.
E – Why is that?
Z – It’s because when you guys chat, you are loud and when I’m tired I get headaches and noises bother me.
E – I’m really sorry, but you know the time difference is several hours and there is nothing I can do about it.
Z – Yes, I understand. Maybe you could turn your computer off when I go to bed and turn it back on when I'm already asleep. Also, if you bought a pair of headphones and kept it more quiet when you speak I wouldn’t hear your conversation.
E – That could probably work. I was going to get a pair anyway.
Z – Thank you so much.

E – How can I help you?
Z – Hi. I’d like to know if there is a direct train connection from here to Warsaw.
E – I’m afraid not. You would have to change at least twice to get to Warsaw. First, you need to take a train to London and then from there either to Paris or Brussels and only then you could take a train to Warsaw.
Z – OK, thank you. I guess this would work. What time does the next train to London depart? And which platform does it depart from?
E – It departs in 30 minutes from platform 11.
Z – Thank you. One more thing, am I eligible for a student discount?
E – Yes, you are.
Z – Perfect, I’ll have one student ticket to Warsaw through London and Paris then.

E – What’s a sports day in a Polish school like?
Z – It’s a lot of fun. We have a big gymnasium at my school so it is always held there.
E – Wow, that’s cool. What kind of sports do you guys do?
Z – The biggest one is a volleyball tournament because volleyball is very popular in Poland. But apart from that we different kinds of individual sports like short and middle distance running, long jump, high jump and short put.
E – Do you remember anything funny that happened during a sports day.
Z – Yes, one time my friend who was in the school volleyball team forgot his uniform. The only spare one they had left was 3 sizes too small for him but he had play in it and he looked hilarious.

Z – So, we’re going to get a tour guide to see the city, right?
E – No, why would we do that? It’s a waste of money.
Z – No, it’s not! If you find a good tour guide he can show you so many interesting things you wouldn’t even know about if you toured on your own. Also, good tour guides are very knowledgeable, so you can learn a lot from them.
E – Perhaps, you’re right. But I don’t think I can afford paying for a tour guide.
Z – OK, that’s fine. I’ll pay most of the charge.

E – Have you ever been to a zoo in Poland?
Z – Yes, of course. Several times. The last time I went was 4 months ago.
E – Wow, what kind of animals did you see there?
Z – Too many to list! But to name a few I saw elephants, hippos, baboons, ostriches, giraffes, parakeets and many more.
E – How did you like it there?
Z – It was very nice. They had recently completed a new, bigger section for elephants so I could see all of them very clearly.

Z – Hi, when is this book due?
E – It is due in 2 days.
Z – I think I’m going to need it for a bit longer. Is it possible for me to get an extension?
E – I’m afraid not. There is a person waiting to check it out.
Z – Could I keep it longer if I got that person’s approval?
E – Yes, but he needs to come here and confirm it.

E – What’s the age requirement to start education in Poland?
Z – It’s always been mandatory for 7 year olds to start but they’re going to reduce it to 6 six years of age.
E – That’s interesting. What are the different educational stages?
W – Well, at the beginning there is primary school of course, which is called “szkoła podstawowa” in Polish, and it goes from Year 1 to Year 6. Then there are 3 years of the so called “Gimnazjum”. Finally there’s either 3 years of Liceum or 4 years of Technikum. Technikum is kind of a technical school and most students who graduate from those, don’t go to to university.
E – Is there a final exam at the end?
W – Yes, it’s called “Matura”. You get to choose subjects which you’re going to study at an advanced level depending on what you want to study at university.

(na skanie nie widać kto zaczyna, więc zaczne od Z)
Z – I’ve had some problems with my computer lately.
E – Really? What happened?
Z – I was downloading a new update for my software when I realised that I got a virus.
E – What did you do about it?
Z – I was a little worried at first, because my anti-virus software detected it but didn’t know where it was. I tried to scan my hard drive and look for it myself but it didn’t work so I took it to service.
E – That sounds like trouble. What did they do?
Z – They used different anti-virus software, found the virus and deleted it. I bought the software they used so I should be safer from now. I’m also going to more careful with the websites I download my updates from.
