The British Electoral System
General election in Britain take place at least every five years.
The country is divided up into constituency (areas) in which the various candidates, who are usually members of political parties, put themselves up for election.
Each candidate hopes to become the member of parliament for that constituency.
The electoral system is not proportional representation , where the total number of votes for each party across the country is taken into account, but 'first past the post', where the winner in each constituency is elected and all the other votes count for nothing.
If a party wins a majority of seats in parliament, they form a government, and their leader becomes prime minister.
If no party has a majority, then it is a hung parliament and the opposing parties may agree to form a coalition.
