In this short essay I am going to express my opinion about using telephones at school. There are many voices that postulate that students should not use telephones at school because they are distracted by them. I have to say it seems a bit far-fetched.
First of all, students use their mobile phones at the time. They are used to using them when they need to find some information on the Internet. Telephones are natural resources they turn to when they need to know something immediately. If we say that school is a place for learning, they why would we deprive students of the tool that they use to acquire knowledge?
Second of all, telephones are not distractors. They are attention-grabbers, certainly, but to call them distractor is to frame them negatively. I think that a resourceful teacher can use the fact that students use telephones on daily basis, organising some in-class or out-class activities that involve phones. It actually takes minimal effort to organise a class around telephones because they are already there.
I hope to have proved that telephones are not really distracting. They may be when they are framed this way. When we change our mindset, it is definitely easier to implement changes in the classroom and make student more receptive to what we do and say.
