The British stayed in India until 1947 when India a national languge, its railways(over one million people work on Indian railways today), its civil service and cricket. India Today India is a multi-cultural county with differen religions. Over 80% of the population are Hindus. 13,4% are Muslims, 2,3% are Christians and 1,9% are Sikhs.Hindi and English are the national languages but only 30% of the population speak Hindi. There are 17 other official languages so educated people in different parts of India use English as a common language. There are two images of India. The traditional image is that of a poor agricultural country with lots of people who can't read and write. The other face of India is that of a modern dynamic economy that is growing very quickly.India is one of the world leaders in the computer industry. It has thousands of universities and Indians are some of the top software engineers in the world.
