Belchatowis a district town, the capitaldistrictBełchatów.Oneof the four largestcitiesin terms of populationLodz region, located20 kmwest ofPiotrków.

The firstmention ofBelchatowoldestdates back to 1391.The first ownerand founder ofthe settlementwasBełchat.

In 1617,the owners ofBelchatowSophiaand NicholasKowalewscyBykowskichfoundeda wooden church anda Franciscan monastery.

In 1670they becamethe owners ofBelchatowRychłowscy.Thesource ofthe greatest sharein the creation ofBelchatowasan urban center.Merchants and craftsmenwere brought in,efforts were made tograntthe privilegeto hostfairs and markets(andwas grantedin 1737).

In 1743,King AugustusIII of SaxonygaveBełchatowowicivic rights.

In 1801,the firstcityfounded intextilemanufacture.Withthe development ofdraperyBelchatowwas inthe list of "factorytowns"in1820.

Textilefavorable situationlasted until1832(the fall ofthe November Uprising).At that time,the brothersLeonand StanislawKaczkowscy,caring for thedevelopment of the city,foundedthe firstfactory.By 1850,the cityhas grownconsiderably.

In 1870,the city lostits town charterforactive assistanceinthe uprising.Despite the loss ofcivic rightsand belongingto the municipalityBełchatówek, the settlementhas continued togrow.Number of newhomesbuilt,launchedseveral factories.

In the firsthalf of the nineteenthcentury theCatholic schoolto whichstudentsinitiallyattendedthreefaiths.Later becamea school forProtestantsand Jews.

In the early twentiethcentury, asystemtelephone,organizedbank,court,public libraryandbuilt apower plantfor thecity.

Cityregainedits town charterin 1925.
