Krakow is one if the oldest and famous cities in Poland. It is located in southern part of the country, about eighty kilometers north of Tatra Mountains. According to the legend, Kraków took its name from prince Krak, the fictional ruler of Poles. Krakow used to be the capital of Poland for many years.
One of the most recognizable city's landmarks is Wawel Hill with the magnificent castle, which was home to the Polish kings. Another place, which is worth seeing is the Main Market Square. There is the famous Saint Mary's Basilica located in the eastern part of the square. The church is well know for the wooden altar carved by Wit Stwosz. Sukiennice - renaissance building in the middle of the Main Market Square is another example of the city's beauty and the atmosphere.
Speaking of Krakow, it is not possible to miss Jagiellonian University - the oldest university in Poland and one of the oldest one all over the world. Many famous people used to study there: Jan Kochanowski, Mikolaj Rej, Andrzej Frycz Modrzewski just to mention a few.
Krakow is also the important cultural centre. There are many theatres, museums and concert venues there. Many different cultural events take place in Krakow during whole year. All this makes the city the most commonly visited place by foreign tourists.
