Magnesium is a chemical element with the symbol Mg, atomic number 12, and common oxidation number +2. It is analkaline earth metal and the eighth most abundant element in the Earth's crust and ninth in the known universe as a whole. Magnesium is the fourth most common element in the Earth as a whole (behind iron, oxygen and silicon), making up 13% of the planet's mass and a large fraction of planet's mantle.
Elemental magnesium is a fairly strong, silvery-white, light-weight metal (two thirds the density of aluminium). It tarnishes slightly when exposed to air, although unlike the alkali metals, storage in an oxygen-free environment is unnecessary because magnesium is protected by a thin layer of oxide that is fairly impermeable and difficult to remove. Like its lower periodic table group neighbor calcium, magnesium reacts with water at room temperature, though it reacts much more slowly than calcium. When submerged in water, hydrogen bubbles will almost unnoticeably begin to form on the surface of the metal, though if powdered it will react much more rapidly. The reaction will occur faster with higher temperatures (see precautions). Magnesium's ability to react with water can be harnessed to produce energy and run amagnesium-based engine. Magnesium also reacts exothermically with most acids, such as hydrochloric acid (HCl).
Magnesium is directly involved in 300 bodily functions, and is one of the most essential minerals to our wellbeing. After potassium, magnesium is the second highest mineral level inside our cells. Magnesium is essential for the proper functioning of the body in many ways: it is required for nerves, muscles, the immune system, cellular function, 90 different enzymes require magnesium in order to metabolise energy. Treatment with magnesium supplements reduces the incidence of heart attacks, repeat attacks following an initial heart attack, and cardiac arrhythmia. Supplements have also been used successfully to treat some patients with asthma and allergies, and some with ME (chronic fatigue syndrome).
A shortage of magnesium can develop gradually, leading to a range of symptoms including anxiety, fatigue, muscle weakness, cramps, insomnia, restless legs and nausea. It may also be implicated in premenstrual tension. Kidney disease, diabetes and some hormonal disorders can increase the shortage of magnesium.
Although magnesium deficiency is a harmful condition which can lead to a series of complications, it is very easy to prevent it in very first place. The best measure to prevent magnesium deficiency is to include magnesium rich foods in your daily diet. Magnesium is found in green vegetables, wholemeal flour, milk, eggs, fish, pulses, shellfish, nuts (especially peanuts), meat and cereals.The Recommended Daily Allowance is around 300mg, and 450mg for pregnant women and nursing mothers.
