Leon Theremin: The man and the music machine

In 1922 Leon Theremin, a young Russian scientist and inventor was called on to meet Lenin. The reason for this was his revolutionary, at those times, invention – an electronic musical instrument that could be played without being touched. Lenin was so impressed that he immediately sent Theremin to show off his instrument and Soviet technology to the US. Seven years later RCA (Radio Corporation of America) became the first mass producer of his instrument in the US. Unfortunately, the production was halted a few months later because of the Wall Street Crash and of the fact that it wasn’t as easy to play as it seemed. Theremin stayed in the US for a while and took part in many scientific projects – none of them, however, became a commercial success and soon he was in debt. In 1938 he got married to Lavinia Williams, a black ballet dancer, which got him into even bigger trouble. At those times, inter-racial marriages were unacceptable in  American society. Some time later that year, he returned to the Soviet Union leaving his wife behind.

Albert Glinsky, the author of Theremin’s biography, said that the real reason Leon had been sent to the US was his espionage mission. “He had special access to firms like RCA, GE, Westinghouse, aviation companies and so on and shared his latest technical know-how with representatives from these companies to get them to open up to him about their latest discoveries,”, says Glinsky.

Leon Theremin died in 1993, three years before his hundredth birthday, but enthusiasts around the world keep on making and playing his instrument even nowadays.
