In Poland, the Catholic Church, unable to eradicate the customs, beliefs derived from the Slavic, the annual celebration of pagan Sobotka, attempted to assimilate the holidays with Christian rituals (hence the later eve of St. Jana - commonly called a midsummer night and having the many borrowings from earlier holidays - celebrated on the night of 23 to 24 June).

In Latvia, under the name of LIGO is a public holiday, and after independence, 23 and 24 June became public holidays. Also in Lithuania June 24, since 2005, is a day off from work.
