Coleridgewas bornon October 21,1772 yearsin OtterySt Maryinthe south-westof Englandas thetenth andyoungest child ofJohnColeridge- an Americanpastorand teacher.At age tenhewasa poetorphaned.

Since1782,after thedeath of his father,he attended thefamousChrist's Hospitalschoolin London.He lived inthedormfor the nexteight yearswithout a break, even onvacation.Fromthose yearssurvivedColeridge'simageas a verywell-readprimus, whoat an early agemastered theclassical languages.InOctober 1791he enteredatJesus Collegeat Cambridge University(in January this yearhe graduated fromthe sameuniversityWordsworth).But I could notfind auniversitythat is notrepresentedin the eighteenthcentury,a high level,the more thatthefirst timefell in love with(inof a certainMaryEvans)andalso the first timetastedthe rejectedlove.During theuniversityis alsofascinatedColeridgeideals ofthe French Revolution.He leftschoolin 1793.

In December1793,as a result ofa lovedisappointmentand graduallyfalling intodebt,he joined the armyas a simpleprivatein the 15thRegiment ofLight Dragoonsunder theassumed name ofSilasTomkynsComberbacke.Hypersensitivepoet, however,could notadjust to thebrutality of thesoldier's lifeand with the helpof friends,afteronlyfourmonths,gave up his careerin the armyof King George.

AfterunfinishedstudiesColeridgelivedfor some timethe readingspublishedin Bristolin thehomeland.October 4, 1795year 23-year-oldpoet,who have noprofession andlivelihood,he marriedSaraFricker,but this was nota successfulmarriage.The couplewereextremelydifferentpersonalitiesand, althoughthey waiteduntilfour children(bornin 1796, 1798, 1800 and1802), they were unableto communicate, and oftencausespainto one another, resultingina gentleColeridge'sfrequent depressions.Mainstayin bitternessbecamefriends withthey metin 1795,Wordsworthand hissisterDorothy.For them,the poetalsometthe great loveof his lifeand the inspirationfor hispoetry - theyounger sisterof William's wife, SarahHutchinson,in his poemshesangunder theanagram ofAsra.
