Pierwszy (10 VII- 7VIII) polegał głównie na niszczeniu żeglugi i portów brytyjskich, podczas drugiej fazy (8- 23 VIII) Niemcy rozpoczęli ataki na brytyjskie lotnictwo, nie przerywając działań przeciw żegludze. Trzecia faza (24 VIII- 6 IX) polegała na zniszczeniu brytyjskiego sił powietrznych na terenie całego kraju. Kolejne stadium (7- 30 IX) miała na celu zbombardowanie Londynu. Mimo tego, że zginęło wtedy około 14 000 brytyjskich cywilów nie załamało to ich woli walki. Brytyjczycy bronili się bardzo umiejętnie i ponieśli mniejsze straty niż III Rzesza, wygrywając tą bitwę. Ostatni (październikowy) etap miały na celu wyczerpanie brytyjskiej obrony, gdyż niemieckie lotnictwo było już pokonane. Brytyjczycy oprócz ogromnej determinacji zawdzięczają zwycięstwo szczęściu, 17 IX 1940r. Hitler odwołał rozkaz inwazji na Wyspy Brytyjskie ze względu na złe warunki atmosferyczne. Nie wykorzystał on również swojej szansy po bombardowaniu Londynu, gdyż zamiast wysłać tam przedstawicieli innych sił zbrojnych nie podjął żadnych efektywnych działań militarnych.
