It is believed that the first humans to settle in Ireland were Mesolithic hunters and gatherers who came across from Scotland in a small boats sometime around 8000BC. The Island continued to be invaded by various peoples including the Vikings in the 9th century AD, the Anglo-Normans in 1171 AD, and the English who managed to bring the country under their control and create a new political state called the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland in 1801. Ireland was now controlled from London and its people became subjects of the British Crown. The Irish were not allowed to own land or speak the Irish language, and were barred from many jobs. People started to emigrate to America and when a disease destroyed crops of potatoes and caused a famine between 1845 and 1852, 25% of the population either died or emigrated. The long struggle against English rule continued until Ireland Finally Gained ist freedom after a blood War of Independence between 1919 and 1921. The British pulled out of most of the country and the Free State of Ireland was created, which incorporated 5/6 of the island and which would later become the Republic of Ireland in 1949. The remaining part became Northern Ireland, which is part of the UK. Today, Ireland is an entirely independent country with its own government and very unique national identity. Ireland is known for its impressive coastlines and beautiful green lands capes, and for this reason it is called the Emerald Isle. It is home to a variety of animals such as the red fox and the red deer, and is known for its quality horses.
