Es una especie de oveja norteamericana caracterizada por sus grandes cuernos. Pertenece al orden Artiodactyla, a la familia Bovidae, a la subfamilia Caprinae y al género Ovis.
Sus cuernos son un símbolo de estatus y fueron usados como arma en las batallas efectuadas en las Montañas Rocosas. También se le llama borrego de montaña.
DESCRIPCIÓN DEL BORREGO CIMARRÓN
El borrego cimarrón macho es ligeramente más grande que la hembra; mide entre 180 y 100 centímetros de longitud de la nariz a la cola y pesa de 58 a 143 kilogramos, mientras que la hembra mide de 140 a 170 centímetros de largo y pesa entre 38 y 85 kilo
Sus cuernos son curvos, pesan 14 kilogramos y llegan a medir hasta 1 metro de longitud en el macho. La hembra también tiene cuernos pero los suyos son mucho más pequeños y menos curvados. Los cuernos pueden indicar la edad, el estado de salud y sus formas de lucha. El cráneo es grande y tiene un tendón que lo une con la columna vertebral para ayudar a girar la cabeza y proteger al cerebro del impacto de los golpes o sacudidas cuando el borrego pelea con los cuernos.
Ambos sexos poseen pelaje marrón brillante y cola corta con una mancha clara. Poseen glándulas preorbitales en la esquina anterior de los ojos y glándulas inguinales en la ingle. Las secreciones de estas glándulas apoyan el comportamiento dominante de algunos borregos.

DISTRIBUCIÓN Y HÁBITAT DEL BORREGO CIMARRÓN
El borrego cimarrón se distribuye en las Montañas Rocosas de Canadá, en el sur de Estados Unidos y en el norte de México. Habita acantilados, riscos escarpados, prados alpinos y laderas cubiertas de hierba. Como no puede caminar sobre gruesas capas de nieve, necesita laderas secas en las cuales la nieve es inferior a 60 centímetros anuales.
COMPORTAMIENTO DEL BORREGO CIMARRÓN
Este animal es diurno y gregario y se reúne en grupos de más de 100 individuos, aunque también puede formar grupos más pequeños, de 8-10 borregos. A pesar de lo anterior, los machos y las hembras viven separados y sólo se reúnen para aparearse. Las hembras jóvenes se quedan en el grupo de su madre pero los machos cambian de grupo cuando cumplen 2 o 4 años de edad.
