While learning new vocabulary, it is good to have a list. Then you can check yourself easier.

On the other hand, a better exercise is explaining the words, giving definitions in a foreign language, or even drawing pictures. This way we build associations with the word, which makes it easier to remember. However, this is sometimes impossible, because the word is too difficult. In such situations it is better just to translate it to avoid misunderstandings.

To sum up, translating words from foreign language is a good idea on the elementary level, but more advanced students should try avoiding it, unless it is for making word lists or index cards for learning purposes.
