Wariograf operates on a seismograph. It records the basic physiological functions of the person tested: breathing, blood pressure, skin conductivity. The reactions of the organism to the questions asked are recorded on paper tape. A specialist is able to read them, whether the person committed the offense, helped the offender, have information about his conduct or was his witness. Under the new Criminal Code, such results are accepted as proof. Wariografem not only examine pregnant women and people with asthma, epilepsy, and black lung. In their case, because the results are unreliable.

A polygraph (popularly referred to as a lie detector) is an instrument that measures and records several physiological indices such as blood pressure, pulse, respiration, breathing rhythms/ratios, and skin conductivity while the subject is asked and answers a series of questions, in the belief that deceptive answers will produce physiological responses that can be differentiated from those associated with non-deceptive answers.
