Rezerwat przyrody jest pojęciem związanym z terenami, gdzie naturalne środowisko zostało zachowane w oryginalnym stanie, a jeśli zostało zmienione, to w naprawdę minimalnym stopniu. Pod uwagę brane są zatem gatunki roślinności oraz zwierząt, a także przyroda nieożywiona. Obszar rezerwatu przyrody może podlegać całkowitej, ścisłej ochronie, może być to również ochrona częściowa albo krajobrazowa. Chroniony jest albo cały taki teren, albo jakaś jego część. W rezerwatach nie wolno ingerować w życie przyrody – poza zabiegami o charakterze czysto pielęgnacyjnymi. Aktualnie w naszym kraju znajduje się przeszło tysiąc czterysta rezerwatów.
