At the age of thirteen he was already a talented artist. When he was fifteen he became an apprentice in the workshop of the artist Andrea del Verrocchio, a place where he learnd about paints, colours and techniques. Verrocchio soon saw that the young man's talents were unusual. Leonardo was unusual in other ways, too. He wrote with his left hand, for example. In the fifteenth century, left-handed people were often forced to use their right hand because it was more 'normal'. But Leonardo never changed. He also wrote backwards, so you need a mirror to read his notes. He loved animals and was a vegetarian, which was not common in his day. He used to buy animals at markets and then open their cages so that they could escape. In his painting of The Last Supper there isn't any meat on the table, only bread and fruit. Leonardo was more than a great artist. He was interested in science, anatomy, engineering, mathematics and music. He used to carry a pen and paper everywhere, and his notebooks contained thousands of drawings and observations. In the 13,000 pages of notes which have survived, there are drawings and descriptions of a thank ,a submarine, a parachute, a helicopter, and concepts for other inventions, such as solar energy and the diving suit. These inventions were not made in his day because of the limits of technology and materials. Leonardo was a genius with ideas ahead of his time. The famous psychologist Sigmund Freud said, 'Leonardo da Vinci was like a man who awoke too early in the darkness, while the others were all still asleep.'
