Obie religie charakteryzowały się wiarą w wielość bogów - religie politeistyczne. Na czele hierarchii bogów stał zawsze jeden bóg -w Egipcie RA, w Mezopotamii-Marduk. Pozostali bogowie byli spowinowaceni ze sobą. Np. egipska Izyda była żoną i siostrą Ozyrysa. Różnica polegała na tym, że egipscy bogowie byli przedstawiani pod postacią zwierząt,które były ich ucieleśnieniem, np. Apis pod postacią byka, Bastet pod postacią kota. Bogowie Mezopotamii byli pzredstawiani w sposób abstrakcyjny, nie pzrypisywano im cech ludzkich ani zwierzęcych. Byli to bogowie mściwi, wymagający ofiar, najcześciuej krwawych. Natomiast bogowie egipscy byli opiekunami ludzi. Ofiary im składane to kwiaty lub dary materialne. Panteon bogów egipskich był bardziej rozbudowany.
