Opis
Tom Ripley has been sent to Mongibello, a resort in the south of Italy, to persuade a rich American playboy, Dickie Greenleaf, to return home. Ripley, who is in trouble with the American police, welcomes the opportunity to change his life. He soon becomes jealous of Dickie and his relationship with his girlfriend, Marge. When Ripley's friendship is rejectedby Dickie, he murders him. His plan is to take over his identity and wealth. In this extract, Ripley has to lie Marge about Dickie's sudden disappearance.

Tom Ripley stepped off the bus in Mongibello almost directly in front of Marge.
'Where's Dickie?' she asked.
'He's in Rome' Tom smiled easily, absolutely prepared for Marge's questions. 'I came to get some of his stuff to take to him.'
'Is he staying with somebody?'
'No, just in a hotel.'
Tom began to walk towards the house and Marge followed him. Tom took the big iron key and anlocked the terrace door.
'How long do you tink Dickie's going to be away?'
Tom frowned thoughtfully. 'Well, I don;t really know. I think he's just enjoying a change of scene.'
'How long are you staying here?'
'Just overnight. I'll be going back to Rome tomorrow afternoon.'
'I won't see you again, unless you're at the beach. Tell Dickie to write a postcard. Which hotel is he staying at?'
'Oh- uh- what was the name of it? Near the Piazza di Spagna?'
'The Inghilterra?'
'That's it.'
'All right. I'd better go. Bye.'
Tom went upstairs to Dickie's bedroom. There were letters, keys, address books and clothes. He worked calmly. He opened the drawers quickly and emptied them into a siutcase. It was after four before Marge appeared.
'Still here?'. she asked as she came into Dickie's room. She looked more agitated than she was earlier.
'Yes, I had another call from Dickie. He's decided to move to Rome.' Tom stood up and smiled a little, pretending to look surprised. 'He wants me to pick up all his things.'
'Move to Rome? For how long?'
'I don't know. For the rest of the winter, at least.'
Marge stood up and said goodbye. She looked distressed. Tom had a feeling she would telephone Dickie. Or even go to Rome. But what could she do there? People change hotels. And there were enough hotels to keep her busy for days.
Tom Ripley has murdered American playboy Dickie Greanleaf. The reason of doing this was that dickie refused being friends with him. Now he has to hide the fact that he killed him from his girlfriend Marge.
while getting out of the bus he almoust get into Marge. She was asking about Dickie, but Tom was prepared for this. He told, that her boyfriend is in Roma and he wanted to get some things for him. For Marge wasn't sure still, she asked if he stays with someone. Tom said that he isn't, and walked into house. she was following him. He told her, that he's going to pack dickie's stuff to suitcases. She was unsure, but only told him to send her postcard from the Inghilterra. It was 4 p.m., when Marge get into room and noticed Tom still packing Dickie's things. She was surprised, so asked about what is he still here doing. He answered, that Dickie called him and let him pack everything, since he's moving to Roma. Marge asked, if he knows how long will he be staying. He wasn't sure, he told, but minimum to the end ofthis winter, and get out of the house.
He wasn't sure, if he did everything clearly and perfect, and he wasn't sure, if she would try to call Dickie or fly to Roma. But there are many hotels in that city. He'll make her finding her boyfriend hard and long, he thought.
