At that time the Stuart dynasty reigned, there was a Civil War and the great fire of London in 1666, which destroyed most of the city’s wooden buildings. In the eighteenth century James Watt invented the first steam engine, admiral Nelson defeated Napoleon’s fleet at the Battle of Trafalgar (Nelson’s Column in Trafalgar Square in London). In the nineteenth century Britain was the biggest empire in the world, which included Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India, Africa and smaller islands. Britain led the Industrial Revolution, and London became the biggest city in the world during the time of Queen Victoria. Queen Victoria reigned for 63 years (63 years and 7 months 1837-1901), (she was the British longest reigning monarch), she was one of the best-loved monarch and her time was called the Victorian Era. The twentieth century was the time of two world wars. The Prime Minister during the World War II was Sir Winston Churchill and at that time London was badly bombed. Britain lost its empire because all the countries became independent. But they became associated with Britain in an organisation called the Commonwealth. Elizabeth II became the queen in 1952 (she was coronated in 1953) and Britain joined the European Union in 1973. In 1979 Margaret Thatcher became Britain’s first woman Prime Minister.
