If not for our English classes, you probably wouldn't know a day like Pancake Day even exists!
Well yes, it is not celebrated anywhere in Poland, but in the countries like England and Scotland. It is a holiday which, perhaps not surprisingly, you may love or hate. It depends on your eating habits and how strict your diet is.
It is celebrated on Shrove Tuesday, a day connected with a well-established Christian tradition. The celebrations include eating enormous quantities of this delicious dessert. British pancakes look different than we may know them. They are really thick and heavy. People eat a lot and have fun a day before Lent begins. This is, in fact, the last day of their gluttony, because during Lent cakes and candies are usually prohibited.
The funny fact is that is that in some British counties there is also a special competition for housewives. They are to run as fast as they can to the Church, clutching their frying pans! The fastest woman wins respect and fame!
Whatever you may think of Pancake Day, we should respect this tradition. To remind you, in Poland there's a similar tradition. It is called "Tłusty Czwartek" and takes place before Easter. The English equivalent of "Tłusty Czwartek" is called "Mardi Gras" and it's celebrated on Tuesday.
