THE MISTAKE
The letter came in an elegant envelope. I opened it and saw a piece of paper. It had my name
and a date – 18th of June, 7 p.m. on it. I began reading. It was an invitation to a very elegant
party at my neighbours’ house! I was so stressed. After all, I’ve never been to an elegant party.
A week before the big day I went shopping. 8.1. _____ I didn’t have any nice shoes, so I got
myself a pair, too.
Finally, the big day came. It was Wednesday, the 8th of June. I was a little angry that my
neighbours wanted to throw a party in the middle of the week because I had to leave work
earlier. 8.2. _____ I knocked at the door ten minutes later. And I waited.
A woman in an old T-shirt and tracksuit trousers opened the door. “Yes?” she asked.
“I’m here about the party. I’ve got the invitation.”
„But the party is on Saturday, the 18th!” she said and laughed.
8.3. _____ My face went red. What to do now? I won’t admit that I’m so stupid that I can’t read
the date correctly.
“Erm…Yes. Yes I know that!” I said. 8.4. _____ “Wow, that’s nice. Thanks a lot! Well, I hope
you’ll come to the next party.” she answered smiling.
She believed me! I was saved! But what a shame that I spent all that money on my new expensive
clothes…
A. And then I understood that I made a mistake.
B. I left home at 6.50 p.m. carrying a huge bouquet of flowers.
C. “I’m sorry but I’m quite busy now. So…see you on the 18th!”
D. “But I won’t be able to come so I brought some flowers instead.”
E. I bought a pair of smart trousers and a nice (but expensive) shirt.
