Growing cities claim more and more land from nature. One area where this happens is when a park is destroyed and a parking garage is built in its place. There are both advantages and disadvantages to this.
A direct positive effect of replacing a park with a parking garage is improved traffic flow in the city. Drivers must park their cars somewhere: if not in garages, then on the street. This reduces the amount of space in the street because lanes or sidewalks have to be used for parking. As a result, congestion in the remaining lanes increases. A parking garage can solve this problem.
An indirect positive effect is that business in area shops increases. Drivers can park their cars in the newly-built garage and shop in all the stores that are within walking distance. This increased revenue is financially beneficial not only for the shop owners but for the entire city.
However, there are some important disadvantages as well. One is increased air pollution. Parks with trees are the lungs of a city. They provide people with fresh air and oxygen and remove harmful carbon dioxide. In addition, they slow the pace of people who hurry all day. Parks are useful for people’s mental and physical wellbeing. A parking garage could ruin all this. With convenient parking, the number of polluting vehicles in the city will increase and produce even more air pollution.
Overall, the disadvantages outweigh the advantages and I oppose replacing the park with the garage. (250 slow)
