Starożytny Korynt zawdzięczał swoje bogactwo położeniu na wąskim przesmyku rozdzielającym zatoki Soryńską i Koryncką.
Tędy wiódł najkrótszy szlak handlowy łączący wschodnią część basenu Morza Śródziemnego z Adriatykiem i Italią. Transport towarów opłacał się nawet wówczas, gdy nie istniał jeszcze kanał. Miasto, założone w epoce neolitu, zburzyli Rzymianie w 146 roku p.n.e., po czym w sto lat później je odbudowali.
Pod władzą Rzymu miało 750 tysięcy mieszkańców i zyskało sławę siedliska rozpusty, za co potępiał je w swych kazaniach św. Paweł z Tarsu, przybyły tu w 52 roku.
Wykopaliska potwierdziły ogrom zabudowy, zniszczonej w czasach bizantyjskich przez trzęsienie ziemi. Ruiny Koryntu są pozostałością największej Rzymskiej aglomeracji na terenie Grecji.
Najstarsze ślady osadnictwa pochodzą z V tysiąclecia p.n.e. W starożytności Korynt był ważną grecką polis dorycką.
Około roku 600 p.n.e. zaczął się okres największego rozkwitu pod rządami Kypselosa i Periandra. Miasto było wówczas wielkim regionalnym ośrodkiem handlu i produkcji przedmiotów z brązu oraz ceramiki.
W roku 146 p.n.e. Korynt został zburzony przez Rzymian. Odbudowany przez Cezara i Augusta w 46 p.n.e. Stał się stolicą rzymskiej kolonii (Colonia laus Iulia Corinthiensis), a potem prowincji Achai. W 1205 roku zdobyty przez Krzyżowców. Później Korynt znajdował się w rękach Wenecjan i Turków osmańskich. W latach 521 i 1858 zniszczony przez trzęsienia ziemi. W latach 1881-1893 w poprzek Przesmyku Korynckiego przekopano Kanał Koryncki.
